Frequently Asked Questions

I have received an application in the mail before. Will I be receiving an application in the mail this year?Applications will not be mailed this year. If you need Christmas assistance, please contact our office at 780-414-7695 to apply.

I know a family that really needs help this Christmas. Can I apply on their behalf?
No, unfortunately, you cannot apply on their behalf. Our screening process involves obtaining personal information about the family and their situation which we can only obtain from the official applicant. However, if you do know someone that needs assistance, feel free to provide them with our contact information so that they can reach out to us directly.

I’ve never needed help like this before. What should I expect?
First of all, you’re not alone. Over 60,000 Edmontonians will be in similar situations this Christmas. When you call or visit our office to apply, explain to our Intake team that this is your first time applying for Christmas assistance. They will help walk you through the process of the application and will explain the delivery process for your food gift card or hamper, as well as toys for kids and gift cards for teens if requested.

I’m not Christian. Am I allowed to apply for assistance?
Absolutely. The Christmas Bureau of Edmonton is culturally-inclusive, meaning that we serve people of all cultural and religious backgrounds.

I’m a vegetarian. Will I only be able to receive a turkey for my festive meal?
Not at all. If you’re a vegetarian or have another dietary restriction, please notify our Intake team and they will specify that you are to receive a grocery gift card rather than a hamper. This way, you can purchase food that better suits your diet.

I applied for assistance last year, but my address has changed since then. What should I do?
Because you are required to submit a new application for assistance every year, any change of address will be updated by our team in your file when we receive your new application.

My toys and/or hamper were supposed to be delivered today but I didn’t receive anything. What should I do?
Please call our office directly at 780-414-7695.

I was supposed to receive my gift card in the mail but it hasn’t arrived yet. What should I do?
Please call our office directly at 780-414-7695.

When is the application deadline?
The application deadline is December 8.

I missed the application deadline. Now, what should I do?
You are welcome to come to Walk-In Days on December 22 (9:00 am to 7:00 pm) or December 23 (9:00 am to 4:00 pm) to apply for assistance. Please make sure that you bring identification (e.g.: driver’s license, birth certificate, Alberta Health Care card, or other government-issued identification) for each member of the household that you are applying for. You also need to bring proof of Edmonton residency and proof of custody for any minors.

I’m trying to call to apply over the phone, but the lines are busy. What should I do?
Unfortunately, that means that our phone lines are full of other people calling to apply. If you have trouble getting through, please keep calling. However, keep in mind that the earlier you apply, the better chance you have of reaching our Intake team in a timely manner. The closer we get to Christmas, the busier our phone lines get.
