Marion’s time with the Christmas Bureau began 13 years ago, after a friend had suggested that she would be “an awesome volunteer.” “I don’t know about awesome,” says Marion, “but I do know that I really like volunteering and doing something without expecting payment in return is something I believe in. It’s good for your soul and your heart.”
Marion is a staple volunteer of the Christmas Bureau, giving hundreds of hours of her time over the years to lend a hand at donation desks around the city. Like many families in Edmonton, Marion’s is a mix of different cultures, with part of her family celebrating Hanukkah and part celebrating Christmas—she decorates for both celebrations.
While the holidays are a busy time of year, volunteering has become a tradition for Marion. “Christmas is a time when everyone should share their wealth,” says Marion. “Everyone should have a full stomach at Christmas—no one should ever go hungry, and Christmas is a good place to start.”
