BMO Financial Group has a long-standing employee charitable giving tradition providing support to local charities as chosen by the employees themselves. Through the years the Edmonton BMO Nesbitt Burns employees have been enthusiastic supporters of a variety of social programs and fundraisers. Many of the employees in the Edmonton office take a personal approach to giving back to the community by way of individual sponsorship of food and toy hampers through various organizations. This year they decided to engage the entire office and offer employees the opportunity to take part of a corporate food hamper sponsorship.

The initiative was organized by Linda and Laura, two co-workers at BMO Financial Group.

“In choosing the Christmas Bureau, it was a no-brainer,” says Linda. “Growing up, my own family was on the receiving end of the food hamper program and I know first-hand how much those Hampers mean to the families who receive them.”

“At the start, we knew that we wanted to challenge our colleagues. We decided to sponsor six large families, and we wanted each of our colleagues to have a hand in picking out the food items,” says Laura.

Getting their whole team involved turned out to be easy: everyone was eager to participate.

“From the list of food items which the Christmas Bureau had put together, we created a spreadsheet with the quantities required for each item and placed that list on the refrigerator door in our lunchroom,” says Laura.  “Our colleagues could then sign up to bring in however many items they wish to sign up for, from one can of soup to a whole case of soup.  Believe it or not, the six turkeys were the first items signed up for!”

On delivery day, they had six beautifully decorated laundry baskets along with a second large cardboard box to present to their six families full of wonderful food items to make their holidays special.  Laura and Linda decided to each be responsible for delivering to three of the six families.

“We will forever remember these families.  It is a humbling experience to be a part of something so much bigger than we are,” says Linda. “The Christmas Bureau plays a big part in the lives of these families and they are so appreciative of the Christmas hamper they are receiving.  For me, Laura and our colleagues, it means our giving has touched our community and has done something good.
